# Books that are current every day, not every quarter.

> Steery’s bookkeeping mission reads your bank and card feeds, proposes a category for each transaction and matches its receipt. It asks the person who spent it for any missing receipt. It writes to QuickBooks or Xero only after your Go, so the month closes with nothing open.

- Mission: **Our books are always up to date** (Steery template `books-always-current`): Every transaction is categorized, backed by its receipt and reconciled before the month ends.

## How it actually works

Steery is not another AI agent. The person's own Claude Code, Codex or omp does the work, on their machine and plan, with the MCP servers and CLIs they already use: QuickBooks, Xero, Mercury, Ramp, Brex, Stripe payouts, Gmail receipts, Google Drive. Steery is the companion that steers it:

- **The agent** (you): does the work with your own tools.
- **Steery**: one mission table of every item, its owner and its state, shared by the team and its agents; news from their tools wakes you.
- **The person**: approves the calls that matter, signed on their phone. This mission's rules:
  - Read-only in the ledger until your Go on the exact entries; never post, change, delete or reconcile an entry without it.
  - Never pay, transfer or refund anything.
  - Never send financial data outside this workspace.

## Set it up for your person

Steery needs its apps before a mission can start. Do these in order:

1. Ask your person to install the Steery Mac app, https://steery.dev/downloads/Steery.dmg, and open it. It installs the `steery` runtime and connects this harness. If they cannot use the Mac app, read and follow https://steery.dev/install.md instead.
2. Ask them to install the Steery iPhone app, https://testflight.apple.com/join/Px7xdt92, and sign in. That is where they answer the calls that matter.
3. Once both apps are signed in, ask them to open `steery://adopt/books-always-current`, or to press New mission › "Our books are always up to date" in the Steery app.
4. Steery starts a session on their Mac that looks at their tools read-only and asks them a few questions, one at a time.

## One item, start to finish

1. **A transaction lands.** Mercury ··4411 · Figma · $1,240 · 14 Oct. From bank and card feeds, read-only.
2. **One row per transaction.** Figma · Not categorized · $1,240. With the payee, account and who spent it.
3. **You approve the entry.** Book these 3 transactions? → Booked 3. Missing receipts are asked of the person who spent it.
4. **The books are current.** Figma · Software subscriptions · booked in QuickBooks. Booked a transaction, and the open count drops.

## Questions

**Is this an AI agent Steery built?** No. Your own Claude Code, Codex or omp does the work, on your machine and your plan, with the MCP servers and CLIs you already use. Steery is the control plane on top: a mission table your team and agents share, news that wakes your agent, and your Go on the calls that matter. You buy no Pilot or Digits or any other SaaS for this. It is you, your Claude Code and Steery.

**Can AI do my bookkeeping in QuickBooks?** This mission proposes a category and receipt match for each transaction and books it in QuickBooks or Xero after your Go. It never posts an entry without that Go.

**Is Steery an alternative to Pilot or Bench?** For daily categorizing and receipts in your own ledger, yes. It is not an accountant: it does not file taxes or sign off your year end.

**How do I get receipts from my team?** The mission asks the person who spent it, in Steery, the day the transaction lands. Their answer attaches the receipt to the row.

**Can it pay or move money?** Never. It never pays, transfers or refunds anything, and never sends financial data outside your workspace.
